Being strange or difficult to understand can sometimes be more authentic than being clear, because clarity is often achieved by removing the parts of a feeling that do not fit a recognizable shape — and those removed parts are frequently the true ones.

Clarity as editing

To be understood, we simplify. We trim a feeling until it resembles something already known. But the trimming is where the specificity lives. What gets cut is often what made the feeling yours rather than a category's.

Why strangeness can be honesty

A work that refuses easy legibility may be refusing to falsify. If the actual experience was contradictory, unresolved, or odd, then a clear version of it is a lie, and the strange version is the honest one. Strangeness is not always depth, but it is sometimes the only faithful form.

In essence

Being strange can be more authentic because clarity is often achieved by removing what is specific and difficult. When the truth of a feeling is itself unresolved, a clean version is a falsification.

Related questions

Is all strange art authentic? No. Strangeness can also be a pose. The test is whether it serves the feeling or performs difficulty.

Should artists try to be understood? They should try to be faithful. Understanding that follows faithfulness is valuable; understanding bought by simplification is not.
