LETTER 024·Emotion & the Inner World

How do we look reality in the face?

Looking reality in the face is not a single act of courage but a discipline of attention — staying with what is actually happening when the mind reaches for what should be happening instead.

April 8, 2026

Looking reality in the face means refusing the stories that soften it. It is not a single act of courage but a discipline of attention — staying with what is actually happening when the mind reaches for what should be happening instead.

The mind's softening instincts

Reality is often harder to face than it needs to be because we layer interpretations over it: this is unfair, this means something about me, this should not be. These are not lies, but they are additions. Looking clearly means setting the additions down, at least temporarily.

Staying with what is

The discipline is to remain with the bare fact long enough to see it before reaching for the verdict. Most of our suffering about reality is suffering about our commentary on reality. Looking it in the face is the act of meeting the fact before the commentary.

In essence

Looking reality in the face is the discipline of staying with what is actually happening before reaching for what it means. It is not denial of meaning but the refusal to let commentary replace the fact.

Related questions

Is this the same as acceptance? Not quite. Acceptance is a stance; looking is an act of attention that may or may not lead to acceptance.

Doesn't meaning matter? Yes. But meaning built on a refused reality is unstable. Seeing clearly first makes honest meaning possible.
