Has technology ever really been separate from music?
Music has never existed apart from the tools used to make it. A microphone is technology, a synthesizer is technology — the question is never the tool, it is whether there is an intention behind it.

The anxiety that technology might be corrupting music is older than recording itself. But music has never existed apart from the tools used to make it. The question is not whether to use technology — it is what you are trying to say with it.
A microphone is technology
It is easy to forget how much of what we call natural music is already technological. A microphone is technology. Multitrack recording is technology. A synthesizer is technology. Mixing, mastering, the digital audio workstation, the plugin, the audio interface — all technology. Modern music is impossible without it. The line between the instrument and the machine was drawn a long time ago, and not by us.
Is AI different?
AI feels different because it appears to make choices. But the deeper question is unchanged. A tool — any tool — extends what an artist is capable of executing. None of them, AI included, can supply the reason to make something in the first place. The problem is never really the tool. The problem is whether there is an intention behind it.
In essence
Technology has always been part of music. A microphone, a synthesizer, and an AI model are points on the same continuum. The distinction that matters is not between natural and technological tools. It is between using a tool to extend an intention and letting the tool replace the need for one.

Can AI have taste? A model can reproduce patterns derived from taste. Whether it can possess taste — in the sense of a living point of view — is a different, unresolved question.
Will AI replace artists? It can replace tasks. It cannot replace the reason those tasks are worth doing — and that reason is what makes someone an artist.

From microphones to AI: where does the tool end and the artist begin?
The line between tool and artist is not fixed but negotiated per choice — the question is where the deciding attention lives in the chain between intention and expression.

Why the problem is not the tool but the absence of intention
The problem with technology in art is never the tool itself but the absence of intention it can hide — tools extend intention when present, and disguise its absence when missing.
